NEW WEST LONDON STUDIO COMPLEX

“The UK has an incredible creative community, and the Qube will give it space fit for the 21st century.”

Breath-taking. Ambitious. Inspiring. Forward-thinking. Visionary. All these words come to mind when considering London’s newest “co-working studio complex for ‘creatives’” due to open its doors this December. The Qube comprises 30 purpose-built, sound-proof studios constructed within a 22,000 square foot flagship West London complex which will cater to the needs of artists and creatives working in Music, Podcast, Film and Photography.

Amin Hamzianpour and Nicholas Sonuga are the team responsible for the Qube. Nicholas is notable for his previous and successful history designing and building West London studio complex The Vale Studios (W3) and Atlas Studios (NW2). This latest venture sees him partnering with Amin to provide a vibrant community and unique workspace for the underserved creative sector.

“Working as a music producer for the past five years, I have struggled to find flexible and affordable studio space with a real sense of community,” said Hamzianpour. “Most creators are facing this same battle; artists, podcasters, songwriters, photographers, YouTubers, video editors, directors working from home or in dingy basement studios feeling isolated, with no real sense of belonging. We’ve set out to bridge that gap with Qube; a home for a new generation of creators to connect, collaborate and most importantly feel inspired to create their best work.”

There are a limited number of private studios and offices available for reservation on an off-plan basis with prices from £950+VAT per month.

In addition, The Qube offers a range of packages available which gives individuals a choice of flexible and affordable co-creating solutions, providing members with the space, resources and network needed to write, produce and record to a professional level.  Founding memberships start at £199 per month for up to 30 hours’ studio time and access to the building’s other facilities.

Early applications are advisable. All applicants will be required to send examples of their work and links to social media accounts to ensure they’re a good fit for our community.

ARTURIA MATRIXBRUTE SYNTH REVIEW & PRIZE DRAW

Sourced from article by
Tape Op Magazine

Street price $2000.

“MatrixBrute … acknowledges the past but is firmly rooted in the present.”
Impressive look and feel. Knobs and sliders solid and responsive. Aesthetically modern and classic design. Reminiscent of the Mini Moog. “In fact this instrument recalls the Mini Moog in many ways and looks a bit like a Mini Moog that was given growth hormones.”

Arturia has taken the three oscillator, voltage controlled filter with VCAs and envelope generators paradigm and significantly added functionality without making it additionally complex. Employs a 16 by 16 switching matrix reminiscent of the pin matrix in the classic EMS VCS3 synth that allowed you to make routing and modulation connections for complex, evolving sounds. Also includes a 64 step sequencer, another feature similar to the VCS3 and based on Arturia’s own BeatStep sequencers. Paraphonic mode allows you to to play three notes and voice basic chords. Audio input. Full review here.

PRIZE DRAW to win Huge Hardware + Software Giveaway from Arturia here.

TIPS & TRICKS: TIMING YOUR REVERB

Just like delays, reverbs sound smoother if they’re timed to the pulse of the track. Doing this adds depth without sticking out and makes the mix seem more polished. The two parameters that are adjusted for timing are the decay time and the predelay.
Timing the Decay

In simple terms, the decay time is the time it takes for the reverb tail to die out. If the decay time is timed to the pulse or bpm of the song, the track seems tighter and cleaner while still retaining all of the depth.

To time the decay time to the track, trigger the reverb with the snare and adjust the decay parameter so that the decay just dies by either the next snare hit or a later one. The idea is to make the decay “breathe” with the track. You can use this decay time for the other reverbs, but you’ll probably have to adjust them slightly because the decay response of every reverb or reverb setting (such as hall, plate, chamber, room) is different due the characteristics of the reverb itself..
