As usual New York’s Sonic Scoop newsletter had a few gems worth checking out this month. GEORGE MARINO On June 4th world-renowned NYC mastering engineer George Marino passed away after losing his battle with cancer. Marino had a tremendous career as illustrated by a long and legendary discography that includes such classic albums as Stevie Wonder’s Innervisions AC/DC’s Highway to Hell John Lennon & Yoko Ono’s Double Fantasy Bon Jovi’s Slippery When Wet Guns N’ Roses Appetite for Destruction Metallica’s Black Album Coldplay’s A Rush of Blood to the Head and his latest of three career Grammy wins – Arcade Fire’s 2011 “Album of the Year” The Suburbs. TONY VISCONTI WITH THE KIN AT GERMANO STUDIOS A visit with The Kin during a recent session at Germano Studios in NoHo showed that they were already in a highly productive groove with Brooklyn born Britain-bred bassist composer and arranger Tony Visconti. Visconti started working as a producer in 1967 and never stopped making his name producing 12 David Bowie albums (including Space Oddity The Man Who Sold the World Young Americans Low Heroes Lodger Scary Monsters and Heathen) as well as thirteen albums for Marc Bolan’s T. Rex Thin Lizzy The Moody Blues The Alarm and many more. More here.
