FORWARD STUDIOS, ITALY

Situated 330m above sea-level in the green hills of Rome and commanding exceptional views of the city, the Forward Studios’ complex has been described as ‘an urban oasis’. The studios were built ‘with the desire to create a ‘sound factory’ equal to the most prestigious studios worldwide’ and include two top-end recording studios, accommodation, a gym and wellness centre as well as the recent announcement of their own world-class mastering studio, The Augustus Room.

Forward Studios’ Manager, Massimo Scarparo told us, ‘The mastering studio was designed and realised by renowned acoustic designer Francis Manzella, whose previous credits include Sterling Sound, MasterDisk and the new Universal Mastering Studios in New York; together with over a hundred other mastering suites during the course of his career. He has also won (twice) and been nominated many times for the TEC Award for design of acoustics in critical listening environments and is now a reference for room construction, acoustic design, practicality and elegance.

‘We spent three years carefully selecting the best equipment, cabling and conversion techniques we would need to ensure the room was ‘helpful’ to the listening and mastering process. Mr Manzella was, without doubt, the best choice to help us achieve this. With his critical room design, our engineers can now be incredibly precise when processing the signal, down to 0.25dB differences on specific frequencies. This allows us to compete with the highest international standards for mastering and means we can deliver flawless products.’
