Cream Studios Makes Immediate Impact

19/11/2008

Cream Recording Studios, London’s newest large-scale music recording and mixing facility, has hit the ground running since opening for business in March of this year.

Established as a joint venture between GearBox and former Lansdowne Studios’ manager and chief engineer, Chris Dibble, Cream Recording Studios features a 72-channel Solid State Logic Duality large-format analogue mixing console, custom-built ATC 5.1 surround sound monitoring and an Apple Mac Pro-based Digidesign Pro Tools HD3 system. Designed by Roger D’Arcy, of Recording Architecture, the Studio also offers a comprehensive range of vintage and classic outboard processors, reverbs, delays and microphones, and an innovative High-Definition, non-linear video projection system in the control room.

Among the clients to use the Studio is renowned live sound engineer Tim Summerhayes who booked Cream to mix the 5.1 audio for the Girls Aloud Tangled Up Tour DVD, released through Universal Music in October.  Summerhayes chose Cream because, he says, “it is a fabulous working environment and has all the equipment I need to mix high-end sound to picture projects.  Equally important was the aesthetic environment. I knew we would be entertaining people from the Production company and Record label, so I wanted a Studio facility that was stylish and able to provide the kind of creature comforts my clients expect.”

Other projects that have passed through Cream’s doors since March include the final mix of Missing You, a new album by Grammy Award-winning Korean classical artist Sumi Jo (the album went gold within two weeks of release); a vocal overdub session for Hot House Music with Thandie Newton for Oliver Stone’s biopic W; theatrical and film projects including the mix of the original cast recording of Zorro for John Craig’s First Night Records and three orchestral movie score mixes for composer Rachel Portman - Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 2, Keira Knightley’s film The Duchess and more recently Grey Gardens.

GearBox Managing Director Richard Eastwood says: “We are very proud to be partnering Chris in this new business venture. His reputation as a Studio Manager and Recording Engineer in the film scoring community is second to none; 30 years running a very successful studio really speaks for itself and we have a great deal of respect for what he has achieved.

According to Chris Dibble "The concept of Cream is to offer a state of the art, 21st Century Music Recording Studio, invaluable engineering skills and, most importantly, Studio rates that are realistic to current budgetary considerations.  At a time when the London music recording industry seems somewhat downbeat due to the recent closure of several major Studios, Cream's new Studio is a statement of intent and shows that professional, high-quality music recording is very much alive, well and thriving in the UK."

‘Fully Charged and No Limits’
The Willesden-based Studio formerly known as Battery and Criterion has been re-opened by two of the world’s most successful Producers, Flood and Alan Moulder, who have partnered Miloco to operate the Studio as a commercial venture.

Miloco's Nick Young tells us:
"We are now welcoming in the next era of this legendary Studio, establishing its newfound status as London’s most complete recording experience.  The Studio has been transformed by Flood and Alan’s vision to provide a truly unparalleled tracking environment for recording artists.  A vast live area able to cater for large bands and small orchestras, is supplemented by two huge isolation booths: the first designed expertly to offer a wide spectrum of exciting drum sounds, and the second housing an armoury of awesome analogue synths, amongst them 2 Roland system 700 modular systems, one of the most rare and invaluable analogue keyboards in the world with only 40 having ever been produced. These line-up alongside a comprehensive arsenal of other sought-after analogue toys, and of course Flood’s beautiful collection of guitars including several rare Fender and Gibson models.

"The regeneration of Assault & Battery 2 also saw the installation of an immaculately refurbished Neve VR60 console. This pristine desk is joined by a Protools HD3 Accel running on an Intel 8-core mac and Quested monitors.  Flood and Alan have also gifted the control room with a mouth-watering outboard selection."
