Miloco introduce - BLACK ROCK
23/03/2009
Miloco in association with Kostas Kalimeris introduce Black Rock, a stunning 5-star, 3-storey, residential Studio located high on the volcanic terrain of the majestic Greek island of Santorini.
Surrounded by awe-inspiring oceanic views, Black Rock comprises a stunning villa with five beautiful en-suite bedrooms, a selection of luxurious indoor hangouts and outdoor terraces, a pool and Jacuzzi, daily concierge and housekeeping services and a private chef and waiter.
The beautifully crafted Studio was designed by the legendary studio designer Roger D'Arcy of Recording Architecture. Its large 40 sq m control room features an SSL 9080 J Series console with Ultimation and Total Recall, Genelec 1035Bs and a choice of KRK E8 and Yamaha NS10 nearfield monitors, plus a terrific outboard selection highlighted by some Neve 1081 Classic pre-amps. There is a 25 sq m live area featuring a 6m high arch-shaped ceiling. In addition there is a 15 sq m drum room and a second isolation space for recording vocals or guitars. The design of the Studio allows for clear visibility between the rooms through soundproof windows and thick glass doors. The Studio benefits from natural daylight throughout and phenomenal surrounding views.
Away from the villa the island offers many attractions. Santorini combines immense beauty with a mythical spirituality built around the island's amazing volcanic nature. The landscape was shaped by the Minoan Eruption, which formed Santorini's volcanic caldera. Circling the caldera are the beautiful cliffs which Santorini’s settlements have been built on. These charming villages are famous for their exquisite villas, hotels, restaurants, bars and clubs gazing across the lagoon and glowing in the spectacular Aegean sunsets. Before the nightlife gets into swing, you can enjoy beaches coated in soft black sand and beautiful red stone or Santorini’s idyllic hot bathing springs by the volcano.
The incredible efforts taken to maintain Santorini's rich beauty and culture have made it a truly exclusive and high-class holiday island which, year after year, is voted amongst the world’s best getaway destinations. With the introduction of Black Rock, it now also provides one of the world’s greatest recording locations…
Miloco are taking bookings for Black Rock from June 2009.
AIR MASTERING OPENS AT AIR STUDIOS
22/03/2009
AIR Studios have today announced a new division of the company, AIR Mastering, in conjunction with Ray Staff, this year’s MPG award winner for Best Mastering Engineer and former Alchemy engineer Matt Colton.
Richard Boote, owner of AIR Lyndhurst Group explains, “Offering a mastering service is something I’ve always considered and I seized the opportunity to work with Ray and Matt to make this a reality. I am proud to associate the AIR name and its reputation for high quality recording with a newly built Mastering Studio that offers the same high standard of results.
Ray and Matt, together with Tim Vine-Lott, Technical Director of AIR, have designed the new Mastering Studio from the ground up, working closely with Dave Bell of Whitemark and Guy Wilson of AKA Design.
Ray explains the set up of the new room, "A custom console has been built around the new Manley Backbone. We have a mix of great sounding classic analogue and modern kit, including Chandler, and API EQ's, Neve, Avalon and Cranesong Compressors, complimented by TC, Algorithmixs and Brainworx digital processing. The reasoning behind this choice of equipment is that it gives us a range of different characters and flavours. This mix of equipment also means that our mastering offering is unique in many ways as we have moved away from what you find in most other Studios.
"Our choice of monitoring is of particular interest. Instead of using the standard large studio monitors we have adopted an audiophile approach, which give us a more detailed high fidelity reproduction. We chose TAD Reference 1 monitors, the mid and the high end are time aligned dual concentric which brings much more realism to the mix. All driven by customised Trichord Research D300 mono-block amplifiers. Whitemark designed the acoustics of the room, taking into consideration our equipment choices. This combination provides a clean, even soundstage with superb imaging, detail and dynamic range.
“The studio also features a Neumann VMS80 cutting lathe, Studer A80 Preview ½” and ¼” with custom ultra low noise DAV electronics. All in immaculate condition for pure analogue cutting and CD mastering.
“We are delighted to be joining the AIR Studios Group not only because of its amazing musical heritage but because Tim and his technical team are the best in the business and their expertise and the support they provide is second to none.”
Cream Studios Makes Immediate Impact
19/03/2009
Cream Recording Studios opened for business in March 2008.
It features a 72-channel Solid State Logic Duality large-format analogue mixing console, custom-built ATC 5.1 surround sound monitoring and an Apple Mac Pro-based Digidesign Pro Tools HD3 system. Designed by Roger D’Arcy, of Recording Architecture, the Studio also offers a comprehensive range of vintage and classic outboard processors, reverbs, delays and microphones, and an innovative High-Definition, non-linear video projection system in the control room.
Among the clients to use the Studio is renowned live sound engineer Tim Summerhayes who booked Cream to mix the 5.1 audio for the Girls Aloud Tangled Up Tour DVD, released through Universal Music in October. Summerhayes chose Cream because, he says, “it is a fabulous working environment and has all the equipment I need to mix high-end sound to picture projects. Equally important was the aesthetic environment. I knew we would be entertaining people from the Production company and Record label, so I wanted a Studio facility that was stylish and able to provide the kind of creature comforts my clients expect.”
Other projects that have passed through Cream’s doors include the final mix of Missing You, an album by Grammy Award-winning Korean classical artist Sumi Jo (the album went gold within two weeks of release); a vocal overdub session for Hot House Music with Thandie Newton for Oliver Stone’s biopic W; theatrical and film projects including the mix of the original cast recording of Zorro for John Craig’s First Night Records and three orchestral movie score mixes for composer Rachel Portman - Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 2, Keira Knightley’s film The Duchess and more recently Grey Gardens.
According to Chris Dibble "The concept of Cream is to offer a state of the art, 21st Century Music Recording Studio, invaluable engineering skills and, most importantly, Studio rates that are realistic to current budgetary considerations."
