JULY'S FEATURED STUDIOS
SNAP STUDIOS, LONDON

'Only a madman would build a new recording studio in the current economic climate ... welcome to the asylum ...'
Hidden behind a non-descript facade in North London lies Snap Studios, a unique recording studio offering the very best of today's technology coupled with a rare selection of vintage equipment and instruments. Snap was designed and built by internationally renowned audio suppliers, Funky Junk, who applied their years of experience in desiging, building and equipping studios around the world to construct what they claim is a facility with 'virtually zero noise floor and ultimate sound reproduction' thanks to a sophisticated Westwick balanced mains system and the hand-wound Vovox cabling utilised for tie-lines throughout the building.
Snap's spacious control room boasts 'one of the best sounding analogue consoles ever made', a custom 1972 refurbished Neve fitted with Flying Faders automation. With 2" analogue 16 and 24-track tape machines running side by side with a Pro Tools HD3 system and four Prism ADA-8 convertors, clients can choose the best recording medium for their particular needs. The outboard racks bristle with the very best processors ever made including Fairchild 670 and original Teletronix LA2A compressors, EMT plate and Lexicon digital reverbs and much, much more.
Key to the 'stunning sound', however, is the spacious live room with a collection of classic instruments including a Bosendorfer grand piano, Hammond C3 and Leslie 122, Pearl vibes, Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos and vintage backline by Fender and Ampeg. There is even a selection of classic analogue synths and guitars nestling in the store room!
To do justice to the room and instruments, Snap boasts more than eighty microphones including a Telefunken Elam 251, AKG C12 and C12A, Neumann (Telefunken) U47 and KM56 tubes plus others by Schoeps, Milab, AKG, Neumann, Ficord, Royer, Coles and more.
For those with more modest requirements (or budgets) there is a second studio available for bookings, centred around an automated SSL AWS900+ console and Pro Tools HD3 rig. Snap also has covered parking for three cars, dedicated on-street parking for another two or three, comfortable lounges and a spacious kitchen. For a brochure or more information contact Snap via their listing here.
MWNCI STUDIOS, WALES
Mwnci Studios (pronounced 'monkey') is a beautiful residential studio set in the stunning Taf Valley in the heart of rural west Wales. A mid-size facility with two on-site stone cottages, each able to accommodate eight people, the studio welcomes artists from far and wide and encourages them to create, record and mix in what can easily be considered a 'recording haven'.
Graeme Allen of Amati Studios told us, 'The live space at Mwnci has to be heard to be believed! The studio comprises a 430 sq ft solid oak-floored, stone-walled live room, an additional vocal room and a spacious 323 sq ft control room. The control room has no parallel walls, plenty of natural light and centres around a Manley 16:2 valve mixer, a top class monitoring system from Adam and Mackie and some high-spec analogue processing gear from Empirical Labs (EL8 SX compressors) and Universal Audio (LA610 compressors). Microphones include Neumann, AKG, Royer and a valve Rode.'
Owner and resident engineer Jethro Chaplin is the driving force behind the studio. With over 14 years' experience in studios he is also a musician and registered composer and his work has been used for programs including The Gadget Show, House Doctor and Total Rugby.

LIGHTSHIP95 - THE BOAT THAT ROCKS!
Miloco have joined forces with engineer Ben Phillips to launch Lightship95, a recording studio built in the hull of a ship, permanently moored at Trinity Buoy Wharf, East London.
Miloco's recent press release states: 'The ship is reached via a drawbridge and is split into two levels: the recreational and living areas are on the upper deck and the studio resides in the hull, which used to house a huge diesel engine. The 300 sq ft day-lit control room is based around a Calrec console and Pro Tools HD2 rig and there is direct line of sight from the control room through to the 520 sq ft live room which is also naturally lit through a skylight above the drum riser.
'The live room can comfortably accommodate a band for live recording and contains a good collection of microphones together with a great choice of backline including Fender and Gibson guitars. Add to this some unique reverb chambers and you have a fantastic tracking space.'
Access to the ship's lighthouse (hence the name!) provides some great views of London's skyline. For futher details and contact information please click here.

JUNE NEWS - FEAT MONNOW VALLEY & THE FOLD STUDIOS
16/06/2010
JUNE'S FEATURED STUDIOS
MONNOW VALLEY, WALES

Monnow Valley Studio is one of the oldest residential studios in the world. It has been in operation for over 35 years and it's easy to understand why.
Set amongst 400 acres of stunning countryside in an area of outstanding natural beauty, Monnow Valley provides an amazing, exclusive, rural retreat just an hour and a half outside London. You won't find any laminate flooring or uPVC here. The main body of the live room is lined with oak panels and grain sacks dating from the days when it was a working mill, whilst the conservatory features hand-carved pillars and floor-to-ceiling glass walls on three sides producing a beautiful bright sound as well as letting natural daylight stream in.
The enormous trademark cartwheel doors (15ft hight and 17ft wide) can be closed to partition off the 1,200 sq ft live area, thus enabling variable acoustics between areas. Jo Hunt, Studio Manager at Monnow Valley told us, 'Many of our clients agree that Monnow Valley boasts the best drum room in the world! The control room has seen a few mixing desks over the years but is now home to an SSL 4064G Series. A Pro-Tools HD3 rig sits alongside two analogue 2" tape machines and the room itself has been acoustically treated to provide the perfect environment for recording and mixing whilst retaining the charm of wooden-beamed ceiling and walls. The studio also has a large variety of both vintage and modern outboard, microphones and instruments.
'At Monnow Valley we can accommodate the largest of bands on the tightest of budgets. The 16th Century house has seven bedrooms, food is home cooked on site using the finest local (and often award-winning) ingredients. Clients can enjoy the homely atmosphere of our lounge, games room, fitness equipment and the mile of private trout and salmon fishing at the bottom of the garden. We think going residential offers excellent value for money; our rate includes 24/7 lockout, catering, an engineer and full use of all our studio equipment as standard, often for the same price as just 8 hours in a city centre studio.'
Recent clients at Monnow Valley include Bullet For My Valentine, Feeder, The Smoke Fairies, Detroit Social Club, The Last Republic and Funeral For A Friend.
For more information please visit the studio website or contact Jo Hunt on 01600 712761, enquiries@monnowvalleystudio.com.
THE FOLD, LONDON SE23
The Fold in Forest Hill is owned by resident producers Ollie Couling and Gareth Cobb and is managed by Amati Studios. Graeme Allen at Amati gave us the lowdown on The Fold and why it is their 'most sought-after studio.'
'The Fold is a fantastic little studio which is made up of one, good-sized, treated live room and a well-equipped control room centred around Pro Tools HD and outboard from Focusrite, TL Audio and Lexicon.
'The studio's best feature (aside from an impressive array of mics which includes Neumanns and a Neve-designed SE ribbon mic) is its comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. Ollie and Gareth go 'all out' to ensure that every client has a fun and relaxed session and leaves happier than when they walked in. Not only do you get great equipment and space at The Fold, but you also have access to a huge range of session musicians like The Noisette's drummer as well as Ollie and Gareth who are musicians themselves and always willing to session for their clients' projects at no extra cost! Longer bookings can even include free pre-production time to ensure that everthing runs smoothly when the main session begins. For the price and mic list, no other studio in South London comes close to The Fold!'
Now in its second year of operation The Fold has played host to clients such as Speech DeBelle (2009 Mercury Music Prize winner) and Richard Ashcroft. Plans are also afoot to expand the studio over the next few years.

MAY NEWS - FEAT STATE OF THE ARK & CHEM19 STUDIOS
28/05/2010
MAY'S FEATURED STUDIOS
STATE OF THE ARK, RICHMOND

State Of The Ark Studios is a private boutique studio, packed full of vintage gear, located near Richmond in Surrey. It began life 'hundreds of years ago' as a writing studio for songwriter and producer Terry Britten. However, with Terry's enthusiasm for all things vintage and 'Beatles', the studio has grown so much that it is now fully-equipped and suitable for near enough any application. So much so that, due to the large number of artists wanting to record there, Terry was unable to get back in to work there himself and has had to build a new studio for his own personal use!
Studio manager, Dan Britten told us, 'We tried to start off low-key. The studio was only really designed for the needs of one person and we didn't know how it would cope with the increased traffic. However, we're continually adapting the available space and the old gear has held up amazingly well. Studio maintenance occasionally takes priority over filling studio time, simply because of the amount of equipment we have and because we want people to be able to enjoy it all!
'State Of The Ark's control room plays host to a vintage EMI TG desk and we have a fully-equipped live room as well as four separate isolation areas, two of which are large enough to record drums. We have a great collection of valve outboard gear and mic amps as well as a great selection of rare valve and ribbon mics. Also available (when working) are vintage drums, basses, guitars, amps, a Steinway B Grand Piano, a vintage upright piano, a Hammond B3, Wurlitzer, tape delays, Leslie cabinets and ... much, much more.
'Recent clients to State Of The Ark have included Stereophonics, The Verve, Snow Patrol, Kylie Minogue, James Blunt, Detroit Social Club, The Charlatans, Cassidy, Regina Spektor and Tina Turner. Not bad for a studio that no one has heard of!'
For further information and bookings enquiries for State Of The Ark, contact Dan here.
CHEM19 STUDIOS, GLASGOW
![]()
Located just outside Glasgow, Chem19 Studios is run by independent Scottish record label Chemikal Underground and owned by engineer / producer Paul Savage, who recently won 'Breakthrough Producer 2010' at this year's MPG Awards (see pic above).
Studio manager Emma Pollock told us a bit about the background and specification of the studios, 'Chem19 first opened in 1997, however, a recent change of premises brought about a complete rebuild, from the ground up, which has resulted in two custom-built, professionally designed and equipped studios, with bright and airy rooms that greatly benefit from natural daylight.
'Studio One offers a high-ceilinged, 42sq m live room, large enough to accommodate all manner of instruments, choirs and orchestral ensembles, as well as a generously sized vocal booth and two amp booths. The standard set-up in the control room centres around Pro Tools HD2 running through a 66 channel Amek Einstein desk but, every now and again, we dust off the Otari 24 track 2" tape machine for those who remain committed to analogue. Outboard gear includes a Universal Audio 6176, Manley Massive Passive EQ and Empirical Labs Distressor, amongst other notable names (eqpt list here.)
'Studio Two has a slightly smaller (30sq m) live room, used mainly for overdub recording. It's a great choice for demo artists or budget-conscious bands but can also partner up with Studio One for bigger sessions as both studios use the same Pro Tools HD2 set-up making file transfers between the two rooms easy and efficient. Both studios' live rooms contain a Brodmann acoustic piano and we have a varied and extensive mic collection, including Neumann, Coles and Schoeps models, which is available for shared use between the studios.'
Past clients at Chem19 include Chemikal Underground signings Mogwai, The Delgados and Arab Strap. These have been more recently complemented by an impressive cross-section of current talent from Franz Ferdinand, Calvin Harris, King Creosote and Camera Obscura to Twilight Sad and Teenage Fanclub.
For more information on Chem19 Studios please email them or check their website.
APRIL NEWS feat FX YOURSPACE & PRO 2 STUDIOS
28/04/2010
APRIL'S FEATURED STUDIOS
FX YOURSPACE, LONDON
![]()
FX YourSpace in West London is a new type of recording facility being offered by the FX Group. Two bespoke recording spaces are available to rent, by the hour, with the added benefit of FX Rentals' large selection of audio equipment, mics and instruments handily located on the premises for potential hire.
Both facilites contain a spacious control room with 5.1 monitoring and a dedicated sound booth which makes them perfectly adaptable for recording, mixing, vocal and instrumental overdubs, post-production, voice-overs, auditions or rehearsals. The rooms are intended for engineers, musicians and producers who are able to bring in their own portable equipment which they can then supplement from FX Rentals' vast selection of hire gear.
FX Chairman Roger Evan told us, 'Our aim was to create high-spec spaces without dictating how they should be used. We've already had bookings for a variety of projects including mixing, tracking, rehearsals and composition. One of our first clients was music production company weeksweeksweeks (Shackleton, Jason Carter) who recorded part of their project at home before moving to our larger space for the major part of their production. Dan Weeks loved working here and really appreciated the benefit of being able to use a treated room without having to pay £500/day or more for loads of gear they wouldn't need to use.
'Here's a summary of Dan's comments, "... an attractive, affordable alternative for people who don't have their own serious studio environment ... rooms are simple, acoustically treated, nicely decorated and well organised ... our MacBook, Pro Tools, mics and preamps were set up in 30 mins ... the most exciting part for us was the FX Warehouse ... like a door to a magical, musical equipment world ... from vintage mics to gongs, plectrums to Pro Tools rigs ... all at 75% discount to studio users. Add to that the FX team are amazingly skilled professionals."
FX YourSpace operates from 10am to 10pm, seven days a week with three hour session slots available. For prices and further information please contact FX here.
AMATI - PRO 2, LEEDS
Pro 2 is a large multi-space recording complex located in Castleford near Leeds. It was also the first studio to join the Amati Studios' roster in January 2010.
Amati's managing director, Graeme Allen, told us more about the studio and its history, 'Pro 2 is widely established as one of Yorkshire's finest recording facilities. It comprises six live spaces which range from a huge 1,600 sq ft wooden-floored, high-ceilinged, main live room, suitable for string and orchestral recording, all the way down to a vocal booth.
'The control room is centred around a 56-channel DDA desk and B&W Nautilus monitors and there is an extensive array of analogue outboard including SSK X-Rack EQs, Millennia Twin Valve EQ, EL Distressor, Chandler limiters and a TC Phoenix valve compressor. Added to this their huge mic collection which includes Neumann, Blue and Coles models to name just a few, means that this studio can really compete at the highest level of recording facilities. Its multiple and varied recording spaces offer a flexibility that can't be found in typically smaller, inner-city studios.
'Over the past 25 years hundreds of artists have enjoyed Pro 2's stunning recording facilities and we look forward to the next 25 years of success!'

'Alpha's finer details are what make our clients' experience here so unique; the interior design is stunning and incorporates an ambient fusion of natural daylight, intelligent lighting and sophisticated air filtration; our outstanding microphone collection includes a model Neumann M49, Sony C800G, Coles, Royers ribbon mics and Neumann pencil tubes from the '50s, all of which are treated through a pre-amp selection including API, Neve, Focusrite and AEA all perfectly suited to urban, vintage, classic-crossover and acoustic sessions; DSD mastering and Atomic clock provide the best possible sound in digital, while a choice of Studer A827 2" and A820 1/2" tape machines, with the highest grade RMGI tape, can accommodate even the most ardent of analogue purists. Are we the UK's most advanced recording studio? Well, let's just say Alpha is certainly light years ahead!'

FEBRUARY'S FEATURED STUDIOS
HEAR NO EVIL, LONDON SW6

Tucked away down a small private mews near Earls Court's Exhibition Centre, Hear No Evil recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. Studio owner and multi award winning music and scoring engineer Steve Parr tells us about his studio and clients.
"Since the late '80s I've recorded and mixed music for well over 600 films as well as TV series like Prime Suspect, Silent Witness, CSI, Cranford and Lark Rise To Candleford. In 1990 we installed a Euphonix CS console, ideal for this type of work and arguably the best analogue console for surround sound mixing with instant recalls. We have a large control room capable of accommodating all the clients, composers, directors, producers and editors who invariably turn up to our sessions and I am always on hand to engineer or assist. That way if anyone is unfamiliar with the Euphonix I can handle the technical aspects myself, freeing them up to concentrate on performances. After 20 years working here I know what the room can do, the best mic placements and the logistics of running a complicated session, but I'm always happy to try new ideas if time and budget allow!

"We also welcome more 'typical' studio sessions. Our large, bright live room is acoustically flat across all frequencies, with space for up to 30 musicians. Strings sound great recorded here and the acoustics of the room enhance the sound without producing the longer reverb tails associated with a larger room. We offer ProTools, Logic, Digital Performer, Nuendo, Cubase and Radar recording, live rhythm track recording and string/orchestral overdubbing. We also have a Yamaha C6 Grand Piano, a Hammond B3 and Leslie and the live room lends itself particularly well to video shoots of which we've done a great number.
"At Hear No Evil we pride ourselves on our ability to work quickly and accurately. Each project is discussed thoroughly with the client beforehand, test files are sent over and we check and set everything up in advance to prevent delays caused by avoidable technical hitches. As for the future, we are increasingly being booked to mix music in 5.1 or to add overdubs to music originating from Producers' own studios. We will continue to tailor our services so that our clients can work efficiently and flexibly within their budgets."

HILTONGROVE MASTERING

Located in a quiet, cobbled mews in East London, Hiltongrove is run by mastering engineer David Blackman who, since 1986, has worked on thousands of releases for artists including Coldplay, Keane, The Bluetones, Echo & The Bunnymen and David McAlmont.
After a recent corporate rebrand including a new logo, website and wall mural, David gives us a brief summary of the studio, "Our main mastering room is a large daylit space which was designed by Sir Clive Kenan and can easily accommodate six people. Analogue processing includes gear from Prism, DAV Electronics, Chiswick Reach and a Barry Porter custom EQ built along the lines of the famous Trident equalisers. We use a TC Electronic System 6000 for the majority of digital processing and a SADiE PCM 8 workstation sits at the end of the chain for audio capture and editing. Monitoring is provided by a pair of B&W Nautilus 801s and various Cedar processes are available for audio restoration.
"We also offer exceptional turnaround times on short-run CD and DVD duplication. Paper parts can be printed on site using high quality image disc printers to provide full colour thermal print or simple black text on-bodies."
There are also two longterm dry hire rooms available for rent within the studio complex.

Rates start from £80+VAT per week which includes 24 hour access, rates, cleaning, Wi-Fi internet access, shared lounge, tea and coffee. Desk space is available in the main office from £35+VAT per week. For further details or to contact Hiltongrove click here.
